  • Should I stop wearing my contacts if my eyes are pink and itchy?

    APR 29, 2016

    Question:

I wear Ortho k contact lenses(worn overnight to correct nearsightedness during the day) and I noticed that my eyes are a little pink and itchy. Would it be OK to continue wearing them every night, or could I skip a night?

    Answer:

Your eyes should be normal when you wake up if the lenses are fitted properly and you do not have allergy to the cleaning solutions, giant papillary conjunctivitis (irritation of the inner eyelids usually caused by wearing contact lenses), protein on the lenses, etc. Do not wear them again until they are checked by your eye care professional. Their purpose is to flatten the corneas. If they are not properly fitted, your corneas may not be getting enough oxygen.
