Should I take my 5-year-old to an ophthalmologist if he failed his kindergarten nurse’s school eye test?

Question:
My 5-year-old failed her kindergarten nurse’s school eye test in. He was tested by my optometrist resulting in 20/60 in the right eye and 20/100 in the left. She said he was both near- and farsighted and we ordered glasses. Should we also take him to an ophthalmologist?
Answer:
What is the vision with glasses on? If the vision is good (20/20), glasses are needed and an annual visit to the eye care professional should suffice. If the vision is less, (20/higher number than 20), a visit to the pediatric ophthalmologist is warranted to rule out amblyopia and other causes of poor vision not corrected by glasses.
