Question:
The clear coating on my eye is torn. Does this require treatment or will it heal on its own?
Answer:
The clear covering over the white of the eyes (which also lines the eyelids) is called the conjunctiva. Small lacerations usually heal without consequences. The question is how did it happen? Injuries from fingernails, plants, etc., often carry germs. Larger tears may need suturing or gluing. In either event, see an ophthalmologist to determine whether antibiotics, surgery, or special contact lenses are needed.
