What’s causing the ache in the back of my eyes after welding?
JUN 16, 2019
Question:
I arc weld from time to time. Even with the best welding helmet I develop a dull ache in the back of my eyes which can last a few weeks. The helmet is 100% UV and IR proof. Even at the darkest shade setting, number 13, I still get this aching. Eye exams are always normal, vision is unaffected, just a dull ache in the back of my eyes. Any idea why? Is the visible light passing through the lens still too bright even at the darkest setting?
Answer:
While I am pleased that your eye exams are normal with no effect on your visual function, I cannot provide a good explanation for the dull aching that you are experiencing. Even if there was some visible light getting through the protective eyewear, the symptoms should resolve relatively quickly and certainly well short of several weeks. See an ophthalmologist for a comprehensive eye exam if you haven’t done so already.
