  • When are sports safe after retinal surgery?

    My 13-year-old son recently underwent surgery for a detached retina (resulting from a ball to the eye), which included using a scleral buckle. He is a very active child and plays competitive soccer (as the goalkeeper) among other sports. How long after surgery should we wait before letting him resume unrestricted sports activities?


    Answer:

    Without knowing the details of your son’s injury or eye surgery, it is difficult for me to give you a specific recommendation about how long he should wait before resuming unrestricted sports activities. In most cases, however, we suggest a minimum of four to six months. Speak with your son's ophthalmologist to find out how long he or she recommends restricting sports activity.
