  • Why has my son’s good eye started to turn in after patching?

    Question:

My son has a lazy eye and he wears glasses and uses atropine drops. Recently the doctor had us start patching and I have noticed his good eye has started to turn in. Is this normal?

    Answer:

It sounds like you have been doing the right things. When the good eye is beginning to turn in, it means the previously amblyopic eye is now seeing well. Confirm with your ophthalmologist, but it may be time to stop the patching and the atropine (medicine that dilates pupils) or at least taper the dose since the visual acuity goal has been achieved. The crossing of course needs to be monitored.
