Why is a multifocal lens implant not possible after vitrectomy/scleral buckle surgery?

Answer:
This can depend on a number of things. If the macula (center of the retina) was damaged by the retinal detachment or hole, multifocal lenses are not recommended as they can actually make vision worse since they decrease the amount of incoming light. Also, if there was damage to the posterior capsule of the lens during the vitrectomy, there would not be a support structure to hold this type of lens in place. It is best to ask your surgeon what he recommends and why.
