Why is my vision not sharp after cataract surgery?
FEB 27, 2019
Question:
It’s been three years since my cataract surgery and I have multifocal lenses. I have readers and distance vision is not sharp. What can I do for blurriness in the intermediate range (like the automobile dashboard)?
Answer:
Results like this are not common but do happen with all types of IOLs after cataract surgery. A comprehensive ophthalmic exam specifically looking for dry eyes, other problems with the cornea at the front of the eye, clouding behind the IOLs (known as posterior capsule opacification), or problems with the retina in the back of the eye is recommended. If anything is found that can be treated, such as dry eyes, the treatment should be maximized.
Next, the refractive error should be tested and then corrected with the proper spectacles (perhaps a low addition progressive), or even laser vision correction. If there is no eye disease and your distance vision is not acceptable even with glasses, then, in very rare cases, multifocal implants can be exchanged for monofocals, as long as the patient realizes they will not be independent of glasses.
