  • Will cataract surgery help with my watering eyes?

    Question:

I have a weeping left eye and normally watery eyes. I’ve just been diagnosed with cataracts and require surgery. Will this help with the watering eyes?

    Answer:

Watery eye (or tearing) sounds like such a simple problem, but actually there are many causes of this condition. This can be due to excessive tear production or poor tear drainage.

Glare from cataracts can cause excessive tear production under certain lighting conditions but would not be expected in dimmer light. I am also concerned that you report cataracts in both eyes but only report excessive tearing in your left eye. It is possible that you have a tear drainage problem on the left. I would suggest that you speak with your ophthalmologist and ask him/her about your left eye tearing problem.
