• Will Flying Make a Retinal Hole Worse?

    Question:

A hole in my retina was found two weeks ago. I cannot schedule my surgery until the first part of July because my son is getting married. I will need to fly to the wedding, in Bali, so I will be in the air for 20+ hours, each way. Will the flying make the hole worse?

    Answer:

Typically, flying will not aggravate a retinal hole. However, some retinal holes may lead to retinal detachment. If your doctor thinks the retinal hole should be treated, it would be better treated sooner rather than later to minimize the risk of progression to a retinal detachment. The recovery from treatment for a retinal hole usually takes only a few days.
