• Will there be any studies on Best disease soon?

    Question:

I am a resident of Canada and have three grandsons who have all been diagnosed with vitelliform Best Disease. They are aged 19, 6 and 4. We have discovered that there seems to be no ongoing research into this disease and wondered if you can give us guidance as to whether this may change in the near future ( in Canada and/or USA).

    Answer:

Best Disease is a condition people are born with, which can cause blurring or distortion of central vision later in life. I am sure that research in the future will increase for Best Disease. As we come to understand the implications of current gene studies that are underway for various retinal conditions, applications will likely be made to other conditions, including Best disease, in the future.
