• CMS Announces 69% Getting MIPS Bonus in 2022; Compares to IRIS Registry’s 83%


    About 69% of all practitioners who participated in the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) as individuals and group practices in 2020 will see an exceptional bonus this year, according to new data released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. This was a drop of 5% from the previous year/2019.

    Your MIPS participation through the Academy’s IRIS® (Intelligent Research in Sight) Registry helped lead ophthalmologists to even greater success. We estimate that 83% (87% of the electronic health record participants) of IRIS Registry participants achieved an exceptional performance score. About 3,000 ophthalmologists who submitted with the IRIS Registry received the 100% score and will see the maximum bonus of 1.87% applied to all their Medicare payments this year.

    The bonus for MIPS ranges from .01% to 1.87% based on their performance. In 2020, 534,830 practitioners as a whole participated in MIPS either as individuals or in groups. Other highlights include:

    • 10% had a score at the performance threshold, which results in neither a penalty nor bonus.
    • About 17% had a score below the exceptional performance threshold and will have a very small bonus (0.01% or less).
    • Only 4% of all participants failed and will have the 9% penalty applied to their 2022 Medicare revenues.

    Almost 400,000 practitioners participated in MIPS though Alternative Payment Model, down from approximately 416,000 in 2019, a drop primarily due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Only 237,315 participated in Qualifying Alternative Payment Models (APMs).
