We're Back to All In-Person Meetings on Congressional Advocacy Day

Ophthalmology has an important opportunity to build upon old relationships, and start new ones, with federal legislators on April 20 when the Academy hosts its first in-person Congressional Advocacy Day since 2019.

This daylong event draws ophthalmologists from all over the country to join Academy-facilitated meetings with members of Congress and their staff so you can advocate directly for your patients and the profession.

These meetings will focus on the Academy’s top advocacy priorities for the year, such as:

• Military veterans’ eyecare
• Reforming Medicare physician payment
• Vision research funding

Speaking directly to lawmakers and their staff about how these issues play out daily for you and your patients is key to our advocacy efforts because it puts a human face on otherwise abstract policy considerations.

Following an election year and the swearing-in of a new Congress, many new legislators have only been on the job a few months. They have much to learn as they determine their legislative priorities — especially about the issues we expect to drive proposed Medicare pay cuts later this year. This is our chance to take the lead on these issues.

Since this will be the first fully in-person Congressional Advocacy Day since 2019 and with congressional office buildings now fully reopened to the public, a strong ophthalmology presence on Capitol Hill is sure to leave an impression.
