• Long-Term Advocacy Blocks Minnesota Optometrist Injections Bill

The Minnesota Legislature adjourned last week, leaving dead a bill that would have granted optometrists authority to perform a variety of therapeutic injections and to prescribe oral steroids.

This victory for patient safety was the result of a two-year advocacy effort by the Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology with support from the Academy.

House File 2022 was initially introduced in the Minnesota House of Representatives’ Health Finance and Policy Committee in March 2021. Although the bill had 16 state representatives listed as authors, our efforts prevented it from gaining wide support in the legislature.

Because the Minnesota Legislature operates on a two-year calendar, the bill remained a threat to patient safety in Minnesota for well over a year and required persistent educational outreach by ophthalmologists to keep the legislators aware of its dangers.
