Leadership Development Program Welcomes a New Class
The Academy’s Leadership Development Program (LDP) XVI held its graduation session in conjunction with AAO 2014. The incoming LDP XVII, class of 2015, met in San Francisco from Jan. 16 to 18 along with participants from the complementary leadership programs of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology and the European Society of Ophthalmology. In addition to visits to Academy headquarters to hear from Academy President and LDP graduate Russell N. Van Gelder, MD, PhD, and Academy Executive Vice President and CEO David W. Parke II, MD, the LDP participants had two-and-a-half days of interactive sessions on association management and leadership topics.

March 1 Deadline for IRIS Registry and Meaningful Use
If you integrate your electronic health records (EHR) with the IRIS Registry (Intelligent Research in Sight), you can use the IRIS Registry to participate in the Physician Quality Reporting System and to satisfy two components of the EHR meaningful use (MU) program. You will be able to 1) report the MU clinical quality measures and 2) meet MU Menu Measure 6, which requires that you are able to identify and report cases to a specialized registry. Register by March 1 if you wish to use the IRIS Registry for MU Menu Measure 6.

Mara Liasson to Give MYF Keynote Address
The 2015 Mid-Year Forum (MYF) is scheduled for April 15-18 at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C. During the Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 16, the keynote address, “Politics and Elections,” will be given by Mara Liasson, national political correspondent for National Public Radio and contributor to Fox News Channel.
Register for the 2015 MOC Exam Review Course
Prepare for maintenance of certification (MOC) exams with the Academy’s MOC Exam Review Course. Expert ophthalmologists will guide you through an in-depth review of Core Ophthalmic Knowledge and your choice of one or two practice emphasis areas. The course will be held July 1719 at the Loews Chicago O’Hare Hotel in Rosemont, Ill.

Participate in Politics
The Academy’s 2015 Congressional Advocacy Day (CAD) will be held April 15-16 in conjunction with the Mid-Year Forum (MYF), which takes place April 15-18.
Become an advocate. By participating in CAD, you can create strong relationships with elected officials, strengthen ophthalmology’s presence on Capitol Hill, build support for key legislative issues, and ensure that federal laws and regulations promote quality eye care for patients. This year’s CAD will highlight physician payment reform, relief from quality improvement program penalties, and electronic health records (EHRs). On the evening of April 15, attendees will be briefed on key legislative priorities and will learn how to lobby Congress in support of quality patient care. On April 16, participants will meet with members of Congress and congressional staff.
New focus for 2015 MYF. MYF will feature health policy and practice management themes and provide concrete information that can be incorporated into practices back home. Thursday afternoon’s opening session, “Payment Trends in the Insurance Marketplace,” is followed on Friday by a series of hearings ranging from ophthalmology EHRs in 2015 to surviving an audit. The MYF concludes with “New Era in Quality Reporting: Patient Outcomes All the Time.”
Unite with your colleagues. In an effort to encourage communication and cooperation among the leadership of ophthalmology, 19 ophthalmic subspecialty and specialized-interest societies are promoting attendance among their respective memberships. In addition, ophthalmology training programs, as well as state, subspecialty, and specialized-interest societies, are supporting resident and fellow attendance through the Academy’s Advocacy Ambassador Program.
Register for MYF and CAD. The MYF will be held at the Marriott Marquis in Washington, D.C. Preregistration is available until March 20. The registration fee is $200 until March 2 and $250 after March 2 and onsite. The fee includes MYF materials, CAD, and most meals. Or attend only CAD and register for free.
