Richard P. Mills, MD, MPH, passed away on May 9, 2020, in Seattle, Washington, leaving his loving wife, Karen Covington, three daughters, seven grandchildren and beloved dog.
Dr. Mills’ career in ophthalmology and his vast achievements, spanned the United States from east to west, to Canada and beyond, yet he consistently returned to his Pacific Northwest home, in Seattle. Dr. Mills reached the top of every professional tower he climbed, including academia. He was asked to speak at meetings all over Europe as well as Iceland, South America, the Canary Islands and South Africa. He also was known for his passion for giving back to those less fortunate and served as the Chair of EyeCare America.
As Editor in Chief of EyeNet Magazine, Dr. Mills was masterful at spinning words into gold, skillfully inserting his interests and passions into whatever topic he was writing in his next Opinion piece.
Dr. Mills possessed a perfect balance of intellect and common sense, often delivering his ideas with an unforgettable dry sense of humor. All who knew him are mourning the loss of a giant in ophthalmology, a wonderful colleague, a loving family man and friend. Life with Richard P. Mills, MD, MPH, in it was a more sensitive, compassionate and entertaining place.
