French study to evaluate cost, efficacy of femtosecond cataract surgery

California-based OptiMedica Corp. announced its Catalys Precision Laser System will be used in a study financed by the French Ministry of Health. The study will compare the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of laser cataract surgery with manual cataract surgery in 2,000 eyes at five leading academic centers in France.

Approved by the FDA in 2012, the Catalys includes a femtosecond laser, integrated 3-D optical coherence tomography imaging and pattern scanning technology.
