  • Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. has recognized Dr. Jerry A. Shields, director of the Ocular Oncology Service at Wills Eye Institute, as one of the nation's top physicians. Dr. Shields is among five exemplary physicians who will be honored at the Eighth Annual Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. National Physician of the Year Awards on March 18, 2013 at The Pierre Hotel in New York City.

    Awards are given to physicians who are nationally recognized leaders and contributors in their specialties. Dr. Shields will be presented with the Clinical Excellence Award, recognizing physicians who exemplify excellence in clinical medical practice.

    Dr. Shields established the Ocular Oncology Service in 1974. He has published more than 800 articles on various subjects, but his main interest is choroidal melanoma and retinoblastoma. He has pioneerd new therapies and was instrumental in popularizing plaque radiotherapy for choroidal melanoma. A leader in eye cancer research nationally and internationally, he has published many textbooks and chapters on ocular tumors.

    Dr. Shields is also professor of Ophthalmology at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia.
