    Merck reported an increase in net income from $6.27 billion in 2011 to $6.66 billion in 2012, an increase of 6 percent, according to a company news release.

    In the fourth quarter of 2012, net income was $1.44 billion, down from $1.51 billion in the same quarter the previous year.

    Total sales were $47.27 billion in 2012 compared with $48.05 billion in 2011. Year-over-year expenses decreased for materials and production, marketing and administrative, research and development, and restructuring costs.

    Earnings per share was $2.16 for 2012. Merck is projecting between $2.03 and $2.26 in earnings per share in 2013.
