Axial MRI scan demonstrates the value of diffusion-weighted imaging in acute infarction. A, Fluid-attenuated inversion recovery image is normal except for nonspecific tiny foci of hyperintense signal in the deep white matter. B, Diffusion-weighted image reveals abnormal restricted diffusion (high-intensity signal) in the territory of the left middle cerebral artery. C, Low-intensity signal on the apparent diffusion coefficient map is consistent with an acute infarction.
