    North Carolina macular dystrophy. A mother (a–c) and her son (d–e) exhibit the range of phenotypes that can be seen within families. The mother has 20/20 visual acuity, with a small number of macular drusen as well as peripheral drusen (a) with correlates on fundus autofluorescence (FAF) (b) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) (c). Her son has 20/100 visual acuity, with the classic caldera lesion (d) and corresponding findings on FAF (e) and OCT (f).
