    Glaucoma

Eyelid closure and nasolacrimal occlusion can help reduce systemic side effects of topical medications by preventing their absorption through the nasal mucosa. Tears and eye drops reach the nasal mucosa via the nasolacrimal duct. This pathway is blocked with either nasolacrimal occlusion or sustained eyelid closure for 3 to 5 minutes after instillation of topical medications.
