    The same eye before (a) and after (b) pars plana vitrectomy for retinal detachment. In the top image, the macula anatomy appears normal. In the bottom image, although the architecture of the macula appears grossly unchanged, it can be seen that the line corresponding to the ellipsoid zone is markedly attenuated, corresponding to decreased visual potential in this eye.
