    In preproliferative diabetic retinopathy (PPDR), more ominous ischemic lesions occur. These include irregular dilations of retinal veins, called venous beading (shown on the figure by the arrows), intraretinal microvascular abnormalities or capillary shunt vessels (shown on the figure by the arrowheads), and extensive retinal hemorrhages.
