Episcleritis and scleritis are inflammatory conditions that present with redness and tenderness. The involvement tends to be localized but both conditions have diffuse variants. The etiology is often idiopathic but there is an association with rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune disorders. Scleritis is the more dangerous since it can lead to vision-threatening complications.
