Younger patients with HSV-1 and HSV-2 retinitis have a higher relative risk of previous viral encephalitis or meningitis, and patients with herpes zoster (varicella) virus tend to be older; vaccination against varicella would theoretically decrease the likelihood of developing latent varicella infection with subsequent reactivation.
