In this interview from ASRS 2016, Dr. David Chow discusses his proof-of-concept project to create customized forceps grips using 3D printing technology. He asked 3 colleagues to send him a mold of their grip which he then used to print out a customized grip. Although quantifying the superiority of custom instruments over standard will be difficult, the doctors included in this initial investigation were pleased with the forceps and reported them to be very comfortable. Dr. Chow predicts this technology will continue to revolutionize the medical industry by enhancing surgeons’ confidence with quality tools that may be produced in a cost-effective manner.
