Artisan Aphakia IOL in Adults
By Dr. Kenneth Rosenthal is the U.S. medical monitor for an ongoing
FDA clinical trial of the Artisan Aphakia IOL (Ophtec) in adults. In this discussion from ASCRS 2015, Dr. Rosenthal discusses the history of this unique IOL design and its advantages for primary or secondary implantation when placement of a posterior chamber IOL in the posterior chamber is not indicated and when an anterior chamber angle fixated intraocular lens is determined to not be in the patient’s best interest. Dr. Rosenthal says the Aphakia IOL is increasingly being used as the back-up lens of choice by many cataract surgeons outside the United States. Approximately 450,000 Aphakia IOLs have been implanted worldwide.
