As a professor of both bioengeering and ophthalmology, Dr. Joel Schuman has a unique perspective on how a diverse research team accelerates results and inspires new approaches to clinical problems. In this interview, Dr. Schuman shares some of the ways his own research has been shaped and enabed by the varied skill sets in his multidisciplinary team of clinicians, physicists, bioengineers, and computer scientists. He also discusses how this rich environment led to the invention of optical coherence tomography (OCT), for which Dr. Schuman and his collaborators were awarded the Champalimaud Vision Award in 2012.
