By Howard D. Pomeranz, MD, PhD; Anthony C. Arnold, MD; R. Michael Siatkowski, MD
AAO 2014
Comprehensive Ophthalmology
What does the new accreditation system mean for ophthalmology residency programs? In this interview from AAO 2014, three members of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Residency Review Committee for Ophthalmology discuss the changes designed to produce physicians for the 21st century. Drs. Anthony Arnold and R. Michael Siatkowski say the new accreditation system is based on the goal of continuous quality improvement so issues can be identified early before they become problems. It also emphasizes a new professionalism that stresses interpersonal skills and facility with the latest health technology. Though requiring more work, the new system provides more meaningful feedback for residents and a fairer assessment of their skills.
