In this interview from ASRS 2019, Dr. Ferhina Ali compares the comfort and efficacy of chlorhexidine versus povidone-iodine for antimicrobial prophylaxis in patients receiving intravitreal injections. Her prospective analysis included 50 patients who were randomized to povidone-iodine in one eye and chlorhexidine in the fellow eye. Patients reported greater comfort and less pain with chlorhexidine compared with povidone-iodine. Antimicrobial efficacy was comparable between groups, but eyes treated with povidone-iodine experienced more surface changes.
