Dr. Paul Hahn, as part of the ASRS Research and Safety in Therapeutics Committee, explains a recent study identifying adverse events caused by laser vitreolysis for symptomatic floaters. Thus far, retina specialists have reported 5 different complications: focal cataracts, prolonged IOP elevation, retinal tears or detachments, focal hemorrhages and increased floaters. However, the study only considered complications voluntarily submitted to the committee but does not speak to the procedure's efficacy, explained Dr. Hahn. He also encourages all retina specialists to report complications involving drugs, devices or procedures to the ASRS committee.
