Localized Opacification of Hydrophilic Acrylic IOLs
By Lisa B. Arbisser, MD; Liliana Werner, MD, PhD
AAO 2015
Cataract/Anterior Segment
Dr. Liliana Werner discusses a case series of localized calcification seen on the anterior surface of various hydrophilic acrylic IOLs, with deposits distributed in a round pattern within the margins of the capsulorhexis or pupil. Initially, it appeared that opacification occurred only after procedures involving intracameral injections of air or gas, such as DSEK, but since the publication of her findings in the January issue of the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery, additional cases have been referred to the Moran Eye Center involving other surgical procedures. She discusses possible explanations, along with the differences from dystrophic calcification. Dr. Werner’s findings were presented during the poster session at AAO 2015.
