In this AAO 2018 interview, Dr. Vikram Durairaj describes how he manages orbital fractures, specifically in pediatric patients. Fractures in younger patients are unique and unlike those in adults, he explains. Many pediatric cases include trap door fractures, which escalate the urgency for treatment. Mild or severe injuries can also make it harder to diagnose cases. Dr. Durairaj usually prioritizes these surgeries because waiting too long may increase the risk of double vision after the procedure. He believes ophthalmologists are uniquely qualified to treat orbital trauma because they understand the indications, modern surgical techniques and can manage postoperative complications.
