Optimizing the Ocular Surface for Cataract Surgery

In this interview from AAO 2019, Dr. Preeya Gupta discusses how to optimize the ocular surface for cataract surgery. It is important to consider ocular surface diseases, she explains, because they can alter measurements and have a significant refractive impact. These include a broad range of conditions such as dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction, Salzmann’s nodules anterior basement membrane dystrophy and pterygium. She recommends performing a good slit-lamp exam and thorough examination of the lids and lid positions. She uses topical steroids on anyone with corneal staining and waits several weeks before repeating biometry and keratometry topography.
