In this interview from AAO 2017, Dr. Soosan Jacob describes her new shape change corneal inlay, the presbyopic allogenic refractive lenticule (PEARL). Though existing inlays already offer benefits over refractive surgery, those made from synthetic materials carry the risk of inducing an inflammatory response. According to Dr. Jacob’s research, PEARL—which uses a lenticule harvested during a SMILE procedure—provides similar adjustability and reversibility to other inlays, yet is also biocompatible.
