    Preventing Endophthalmitis Without Antibiotic Prophylaxis

In this interview from the ASRS 2013 Annual Meeting, Dr. Abdhish Bhavsar shares his clinical experience in administering intravitreal injections with neither pre- nor postinjection antibiotics. In the course of delivering 18,000 injections with consistent preparation of only topical povidone iodine, Dr. Bhavsar has encountered a single case of endophthalmitis. The data, bolstered by the absence of any scientific evidence supporting the use of antibiotic prophylaxis, suggest that perioperative topical antibiotics may be an unnecessary adjunct in the delivery of intravitreal drugs and may indeed invite more risk than they prevent.
