In this interview at AAO 2022, Dr. John Thompson discusses the benefits and drawbacks of private equity consolidation of retina practices for both partners and associates. While private practice includes the possibility of partnership with higher earning potential, private equity often offers higher starting salaries and retention bonuses to associates to stay (and doesn't require buy-in costs of partnership). A drawback is loss of control over changes that could be made to the practice after the honeymoon period is over and the private equity company looks to improve profitability.
