    The Secret Concretion

By Jennifer Y. Li, MD; Ivan R. Schwab, MD
    Annual Meeting 2013
    Comprehensive Ophthalmology, Cornea/External Disease

In this interview, Dr. Ivan Schwab offers a quick clinical pearl for managing patients with chronic complaints of foreign body sensation. Such patients often have conjunctival concretions hidden under the upper lid. Dr. Schwab recommends everting the lid, applying topical anesthetic, and placing a drop of fluorescein dye on the everted lid. After 5 minutes, the offending concretions will be stained prominently and can be easily removed with a 22-gauge needle or other sharp instrument.
