In this interview from AAO 2017, Dr. Sean Donahue discusses results from the IXT1 trial evaluating the effectiveness of bilateral lateral muscle recession vs. unilateral recess-rectus for intermittent exotropia. The large trial included over 300 patients aged between 3 and 11 years old. Through 3 years of follow-up, there were no clear advantages to either procedure. Dr. Donahue also offers tips on how he decides which procedure to use. In his experience, he finds that bilateral lateral muscle recession is better tolerated and causes less inflammation.
