In this interview from AAO 2016, Dr. David Chang discusses his experience with Zepto (Mynosys Inc., Fremont, CA), an inexpensive and disposable capsulotomy device that uses low-energy pulses to create a precise capsulotomy, independent of pupil size, corneal clarity or lens density. Dr. Chang is a clinical investigator for a U.S. trial currently underway. Inserted through a clear corneal incision, the device uses a gentle suction to create a uniform capsular contact. Electrical nanopulses are delivered to a nitinol ring to create the capsulotomy with no cautery or burning of tissue. Dr. Chang demonstrates how to use the device in this surgical video. Dr. Chang says the system has several advantages over a femtosecond laser: it is significantly cheaper, results in a stronger capsulotomy, provides fewer logistical challenges and reduces overall surgical time.
