In this interview from AAO 2020 Virtual, Dr. Daniel Chang discusses the benefits of violet light-filtering IOLs. Chromophores in IOLs can filter high-energy light. Recent evidence suggests that selective violet light filtering (VLF) and blue light transmission can provide an optimal balance. Outcomes from a 240-patient study show that patients with VLF IOLs had less difficulty when driving at night compared with individuals who received colorless IOLs. In addition, the study found VLF IOLs can provide good protection against subjective symptoms and reactive oxygen species formation while retaining significant scotopic vision and melanopsin function.
