    DMEK in a Phakic Eye

By Francis W. Price Jr., MD
    Cornea/External Disease

When performing Descemet's membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) in a phakic eye, the surgeon must take care to avoid damage to the intact crystalline lens. Dr. Francis Price advocates the use of viscoelastic while Descemet's membrane is scored and stripped from the host cornea. The viscoelastic must be thoroughly vacuumed from the back surface of the host cornea before inserting the donor tissue, because any retained viscoelastic can cause interface haze and poor donor adherence.
