Physicians choose ophthalmology because they love helping to protect sight and empower patients’ lives. But changes in the health care system increasingly threaten that joy. Increased physician burnout across specialties prompted the National Academy of Medicine to launch a wellness initiative in 2016. Among ophthalmologists, a 2017 Medscape survey found a 43 percent rate of burnout.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology wants to change that number and restore the satisfaction that brought so many of us to this specialty. To help improve ophthalmologist well-being, the Academy has begun to develop a series of resources and events designed to help you cope with stress, protect and restore your own well-being and preserve the joy of protecting sight.
