  • AAO’s Basic and Clinical Science Course Goes Mobile to Advance Training and Patient Care

2011–2012 Edition of Leading Clinical Resource Now Available for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch

SAN FRANCISCO – For the first time, the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Basic and Clinical Science Course BCSC is available for purchase in the iBook format. Now ophthalmologists and ophthalmology residents can access the BCSC where ever they like using their iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch–no Internet connection is necessary after the BCSC has been downloaded. Each of the BCSC's 13 sections can be purchased individually through Apple's iBookstore application or iTunes.

The BCSC is the gold standard reference for practicing ophthalmologists and residents. This evidence-based, clinically validated compendium is reviewed and updated annually by a faculty comprised of more than 80 leading ophthalmologists. The BCSC covers everything from basic anatomy, optics and pathology to specialized topics such as retinal diseases, glaucoma and cataract. Thousands of photos and illustrations are included. Each section includes self-assessment study questions and answers.

"This is a great advance, not only for the education of ophthalmologists but for patients as well," said John W. Kitchens, MD, a vitreoretinal surgeon and a member of the Academy's Ophthalmic News and Education ONE® Network Editorial Board. "The ability to access the entire 13-volume series in the palm of your hand revolutionizes the way we learn about eye diseases and educate our patients."

    The 2011–2012 BCSC iBook features:

    • More than 5,000 pages and 3,000 full color images
    • Four majorly revised volumes: Section 4: Ophthalmic Pathology and Intraocular Tumors; Section 7: Orbit, Eyelids, and Lacrimal System; Section 9: Intraocular Inflammation and Uveitis; and Section 13: Refractive Surgery
    • Self-assessment questions and answers for each of the 13 sections
    • Powerful search tool: Find a word or phrase anywhere in the BCSC using the built-in search feature
    • User-friendly tools to highlight text, bookmark important pages and create notes

"Today many people prefer to access news, articles, books and other materials of interest on their smart phones or other handheld devices," said Richard Zorab, the Academy's Vice-President for Clinical Education. "It just makes sense to provide our members and ophthalmologists around the globe fast, convenient access to the world's leading ophthalmic education resource."

The BCSC is also available in print, online and DVD-ROM formats.
