  • The American Academy of Ophthalmology Statement on Gun Violence

In 2018, along with numerous specialty societies, the Academy endorsed the American College of Physicians' policy position paper on reducing firearm injury and death. This week, the Academy Board of Trustees approved this updated statement on gun violence:

Gun violence is a serious public health issue. The Academy calls for increased funding for research into causes and the effectiveness of interventions.

Our members see firsthand the consequences of gun violence, including the loss of life and sight.

Therefore, the Academy joins other national societies, including the American Medical Association, in supporting safety and mitigation measures, which include background checks for purchase, federal requirements for safe firearm storage, enhanced mental health services, enforcement of extreme risk protection orders, repeal of physician counseling gag laws and control of access to high-capacity weapons.
