SAN FRANCISCO – The American Academy of Ophthalmology today announced that Daniel M. Albert, M.D., has been appointed to the role of Distinguished Senior Editor of its official journal, Ophthalmology. Dr. Albert joins the editorial board after serving 20 years as Editor-in-Chief of JAMA Ophthalmology.
Dr. Albert is the author of numerous publications, most dealing with ocular pathology and oncology. He served on the editorial boards of Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Survey of Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, JAMA, and was Editor-in-Chief of JAMA Ophthalmology 1994-2013. He is a Director Emeritus of the American Board of Ophthalmology, past Chair of the Council and past President of the American Ophthalmological Society and a founding member and past President of the Cogan Ophthalmic History Society. Dr. Albert has authored hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific articles and books, including The History of Ophthalmology, Men of Vision and Albert & Jakobiec's Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology, which have helped to define the profession's current understanding of eye disease.

Dr. Albert is the Frederick Allison Davis Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Director of the Eye Pathology Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. He was named Founding Director of the McPherson Eye Research Institute and appointed to its Advisory Board in 2012. Previously, Dr. Albert was Director of the McPherson Eye Research Institute and Department Chair at the University of Wisconsin. He also served as an ophthalmology faculty member at Yale and was the David G. Cogan Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard.
Dr. Albert received a Bachelor of Science degree from Franklin and Marshall College, Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and a Master of Health Sciences from the University of Wisconsin. He also completed fellowships at the National Institutes of Health and Armed Forces Institute of Pathology.
