    The AAOE Program of AAO 2017 begins on Nov. 11.

    As physicians, we primarily see ourselves as clinicians and uniquely able to treat patients, while our staff do all of the office functions. Health care billing, coding and regulatory compliance may be more complex than ever. But, our roles as physicians must be focused on saving or restoring vision.

    Yet, as a managing partner for several years, I have seen how the physician needs to work side by side with the back-office staff and be available for action when needed. Often, a key to the most annoying and burdensome issue is for the physician to give credibility and show the other party this is being taken seriously. From an initial recovery audit contractor audit response, to a patient complaint to the Board of Medical Examiners, an insurance company claim rejection or any number of other issues, our involvement matters.

    Physician involvement also shows the staff and key leaders of the practice the importance of resolving the issue. Many times, getting the response right the first time solves the issue completely. By contrast, a minimal response by someone on staff who is not really sure and does not want to burden anyone else can cause more problems.

    While many of these issues really are just a nuisance, getting them resolved promptly may avoid a rejection and need for appeal. Whether the insurance company, a vendor, or even Medicare, they tend to take notice when the physician is involved.

    It is unfortunate they typically don’t give the same respect to the staff member! But that’s why the whole team must be involved.
