Billing 99215 for Same Day Exam as Surgeon
Question: If our physician determines a patient has a retinal detachment and refers the patient to a retina surgeon on the same day, should we submit 99215?
Answer: There are two points to consider. First, confirm the level is met and secondly consider if the surgeon is examining the patient the same day. The payer may not allow payment of the same level of code for both ophthalmologists, even with specialty training.
