Billing for ORA
Question: Our surgeons use optiwave refractive analysis to correct astigmatism during cataract surgery with premium IOL insertion. Do both the surgeon and the facility charge for the service, and what is the correct CPT code?
Answer: For post-refractive cases, it is appropriate to charge the patient for ORA as this is a non-covered procedure. The practice should create an internal code for tracking.
It is also appropriate to charge the patient when part of a premium IOL package. This includes when consent for the premium IOL was documented, but intraoperatively the surgeon converted to a standard lens; expected to rare.
